African American History Show

·         In order to include more students and families in the fun, we decided to try something a little different for our 4th Annual African-American History Celebration--an advisory driven act.  Putting each advisory in charge of a performance helped those advisories form into even stronger communities.  Our focus this year was the Harlem Renaissance.  Advisories researched the Harlem Renaissance, then submitted their performance choices to the Stage Management advisory.

·         The show was a success.  It included spoken word, poetry readings, reader's theatre, dancing and music from the Harlem Renaissance.  The PTA, The Gamers Club and The Art Club sold food and beverages.

Mix It Up Week

·         November 8-12, 2010

·         This year the Student Government had a big hand in planning and promoting Mix It Up week.  Each advisory has a Senate member representative in Student Government where we planned the different dress days and activities to encourage awareness during lunch.

o   MONDAY, Nov 8:  Just Say Ouch!!  Wear your favorite band-aids. Just Say Ouch is a way to let someone know that they have made an offensive remark without being aggressive.  Many times we say things that are offensive without even realizing it.  You may also say “OOPS” if you catch yourself saying something offensive.

o   TUESDAY, Nov 9:  Love Me For Who I Am, Not How I Dress Day.  (aka: Wacky Tacky Day).  Wacky Tacky day celebrates the importance of recognizing beauty from the inside.  We are often judged and stereotyped by our outward appearance.  There is more to us than the eye can see.

o   WEDNESDAY, Nov 10:  Student Stereotypes.  Dress as a nerd, a football player, a cheerleader, etc.  We are dressing in student stereotypes to demonstrate the harm in stereotypes.  No one wants to be a label.  Thursday:  No school, veteran’s day

o   FRIDAY, Nov 11:  All 4 one, one 4 all.  Dress in one color (monochromatic day). Or, for those of you who can’t make up your mind, dress in all of the colors.  We are dressing in all of the colors of the rainbow to show that we accept everyone.

·         Some Highlights:

During advisory, students looked at bullying.  Then they brainstormed ways in which to stop bullying.

We participated in National Mix It Up Day—a day to celebrate diversity and acceptance.  In order to encourage students to sit at a new table in the cafeteria, the tables were labeled with astrological signs.

During Friday’s advisory, students reflected on Mix It Up week by examining the quote “I am only one, but I am still one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do” by Edward Everett Hale and answering the question “What Can I Do?”  See display in the hall.
